NFL Betting in the UK: A Beginner's Guide
Betting on the NFL can look surprisingly complicated if you’re more familiar with betting on Premier League football. That’s largely because American football comes with its own betting language.
The good news is that most NFL betting markets are actually straightforward once you know what the terminology means. UK bookmakers offer markets on virtually every NFL game, from the regular season and NFL London Games through to the playoffs and Super Bowl.
How does NFL betting work?
One of the simplest NFL bets is picking which team will win the game. In American betting terminology you’ll often see this described as the moneyline; on UK betting sites it’s essentially the match-winner market.
Another major market is the point spread, often shown as a handicap by UK bookmakers. Instead of simply predicting the winner, the favourite is given a points handicap. For example, if San Francisco are -6.5, they would need to win by seven points or more for a -6.5 spread bet to win.
What is Over/Under betting in the NFL?
Over/Under, or total-points betting, is based on how many points the two teams will score combined. If the line is 47.5 points, for example, you’re deciding whether the final combined score will finish above or below 47.5.
It’s a particularly useful NFL market to understand because factors such as offensive form, defensive performance, injuries and even weather conditions can all influence the expected number of points.
What are NFL player prop bets?
Player props let you bet on an individual player’s performance rather than simply the final result. Typical markets include quarterback passing yards, running back rushing yards, receiver catches and receiving yards, and anytime touchdown scorers.
You’ll see plenty of these in our weekly NFL betting tips, particularly when we spot an interesting player matchup or statistical trend.
What is an NFL accumulator?
Americans usually call an accumulator a parlay. The principle is the same as a football acca in the UK: several selections are combined into one bet and every selection normally needs to win for the accumulator to land.
At UK Rookie we’ll occasionally put together an NFL accumulator from the weekend’s games alongside our individual selections.
NFL Betting Terms: UK vs USA
If you’re reading NFL coverage from America, some of the terminology can be confusing. Here’s the quick UK Rookie translation:
Moneyline = Match winner
Point spread = Handicap
Parlay = Accumulator
Over/Under = Total points
Prop bet = Player/game special
ATS = Against the spread
Push = The bet lands exactly on the line and the stake is normally returned
Once you understand those terms, American NFL betting analysis becomes considerably easier to follow.
