NFL Week 7 Talking Points: Five Stories Everyone’s Talking About
The Chiefs humbled, the Cowboys making noise and a new quarterback hero in New York. Week 7 of the 2026 NFL season has given fans plenty to argue about.
Another NFL weekend, another collection of results nobody quite saw coming.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were shut down in spectacular fashion, the Dallas Cowboys delivered a statement win over their biggest rivals, and a familiar quarterback suddenly looks like a completely different player in New York.
Add in the league’s last unbeaten team and another major upset, and there’s no shortage of talking points heading into Week 8.
Here are five of the biggest NFL stories generating conversation after Week 7.
1. Have the Seattle Seahawks Just Exposed the Kansas City Chiefs?
Seattle Seahawks 20–3 Kansas City Chiefs
This wasn’t just a defeat for Kansas City. It was a complete offensive shutdown. The Seahawks held Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to just three points on Sunday Night Football, with Mahomes throwing for only 165 yards and an interception.
For a team that has spent years making the extraordinary look routine, this was a serious reality check. Seattle’s defence dominated the line of scrimmage, disrupted Kansas City’s passing game and prevented the Chiefs from finding their usual rhythm.
Perhaps most concerning for Kansas City was how little they could generate when the running game stalled. The result has reignited a familiar debate: are the Chiefs still the team everyone else needs to beat, or is the gap finally closing?
For Seattle, meanwhile, this was exactly the sort of performance that makes the rest of the NFC take notice.
The Rookie Take: One bad night doesn’t end Kansas City’s Super Bowl ambitions, but Seattle has shown the rest of the NFL a potential blueprint for stopping them.
2. Dallas Cowboys Make a Statement Against the Eagles
Dallas Cowboys 38–21 Philadelphia Eagles
Few rivalries generate more reaction than Cowboys versus Eagles, and Monday Night Football delivered another talking point for the NFC East. Dallas travelled to Philadelphia and came away with a convincing 38–21 victory, putting 38 points on a divisional rival that entered the game desperate to establish some consistency.
For Cowboys supporters, it was a chance to enjoy bragging rights and a reminder of what this team can produce when things click offensively. For Philadelphia, the questions are becoming harder to ignore…
The Eagles have enough talent to compete with anybody, but losing by 17 points to Dallas at home is hardly the statement their supporters were hoping for.
And with the Giants also enjoying an unexpectedly strong start, the NFC East is developing into one of the league’s most intriguing divisions.
The Rookie Take: Dallas has earned the headlines this week, but one impressive result won’t settle the NFC East. Philadelphia’s response in Week 8 could be just as revealing. Good to see Barkley back and grabbing a TD though!
3. J.J. McCarthy Gives New York Giants Fans Something to Believe In
New York Giants 27–21 Houston Texans (OT)
The New York Giants have found themselves at the centre of one of Week 7’s most surprising stories.
Making his first start for the Giants, J.J. McCarthy helped New York secure a dramatic overtime victory against Houston. McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without a turnover, showing the sort of confidence and decision-making that Giants fans have been desperate to see from their quarterback position.
New York entered the contest as significant underdogs, but McCarthy kept the offence moving and gave his playmakers opportunities to make a difference. Devin Singletary eventually delivered the winning touchdown in overtime.
Naturally, social media has wasted little time debating whether the Giants have finally found their answer at quarterback.
It’s early, of course. One start doesn’t guarantee a successful NFL career. But after so much uncertainty at the position, Giants supporters have every reason to be excited.
The Rookie Take: McCarthy doesn’t need to be spectacular every week. If he protects the football and keeps New York competitive, this could become one of the season’s most interesting quarterback stories.
4. Are the Minnesota Vikings Genuine Super Bowl Contenders?
Minnesota Vikings 16–10 Indianapolis Colts
Seven weeks into the NFL season, only one team remains unbeaten: the Minnesota Vikings. Insane
Their 16–10 victory over Indianapolis wasn’t particularly glamorous, but it demonstrated something that successful teams often need — the ability to win when the offence isn’t firing. They just keep grinding it out somehow but I’m still not sure they’ve come up against a serious Super Bowl challenger yet…
Minnesota’s defence once again played a central role, restricting the Colts to just ten points and helping preserve the Vikings’ perfect record. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s unbeaten start came to an end following a 29–20 defeat to Atlanta (waaaaaaaa!).
That leaves Minnesota standing alone.
The conversation now shifts from whether the Vikings can keep winning to whether they’re genuine Super Bowl contenders.
There will be tougher tests ahead, and Minnesota still has plenty to prove offensively.
But being the last unbeaten team in the NFL is no small achievement.
The Rookie Take: Minnesota might not be the flashiest team in football, but a strong defence and the ability to win close games could make them extremely dangerous come January.
5. Cincinnati Bengals Humiliate Baltimore — and Shake Up the AFC North
Cincinnati Bengals 35–13 Baltimore Ravens
If there was one result that made NFL fans check the score twice, Cincinnati’s demolition of Baltimore has to be near the top.
The Bengals travelled to M&T Bank Stadium and walked away with a 35–13 victory over one of their fiercest divisional rivals.
Even more remarkably, Cincinnati scored all 35 of its points in the second half. For Baltimore, it was a brutal collapse in a game that had looked firmly under control at half-time. For Cincinnati, it was the kind of result that can transform the mood around a season.
Divisional games always carry extra significance, but winning by 22 points on the road sends a particularly strong message.
The result has prompted fresh questions about Baltimore’s consistency and whether the Bengals are becoming a serious threat in the AFC North.
The Rookie Take: Cincinnati won’t win the division on the strength of one result, but this was a huge statement. Baltimore now has some uncomfortable questions to answer.
The Final Word: Week 7 Has Changed the Conversation
If Week 7 proved anything, it’s that the NFL rarely follows the script.
The Chiefs suddenly look vulnerable, Seattle has strengthened its credentials, the Giants have fresh hope at quarterback and Minnesota remains the last unbeaten team.
Meanwhile, Dallas and Cincinnati have given their supporters plenty to celebrate — and their rivals plenty to worry about.
With Week 8 approaching, the big question is which of these performances represents a genuine turning point and which will prove to be a one-week surprise.
