Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys
1-15am Sky Sports NFL/DAZN, Oct 9th 2026
Not 100% sure I’ll be staying up for this one! But this week’s Thursday Night Football is Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0–4) @ Dallas Cowboys (2–2) or Friday early hours for us in the UK. The biggest storyline is Tampa starting rookie Jalon Daniels with Baker Mayfield sidelined, against a Dallas offence that’s started the year extremely well.
⭐ Dallas Cowboys — the numbers
Dak is cooking. Prescott has 1,065 passing yards, 8 TDs and just 1 INT, completing 70% of his passes through four games. Dallas are averaging 30.5 points per game — second in the NFL.
CeeDee Lamb is already at 498 yards. He’s caught 37 passes for 498 yards and 4 TDs, an average of 124.5 receiving yards per game.
Dallas have been excellent on third down. One current statistical comparison has the Cowboys converting around 51% of third downs, versus 34.5% for Tampa. But here’s the interesting counterpoint:
Dallas can be run on. They’re allowing around 150 rushing yards per game, ranking near the bottom of the league, while Tampa’s defence has allowed only about 79 rushing yards per game.
🏴☠️ Tampa Bay Buccaneers — the numbers
The record is ugly at 0–4, but the underlying numbers aren’t uniformly terrible. The last time the Buc’s started this bad was back in 2013!
Tampa’s defence is keeping them alive. They’ve held opponents below 300 total yards in three consecutive games, despite the winless start.
The run defence is particularly strong. They’re allowing roughly 78.5 rushing yards per game, compared with Dallas at around 150.3. So if Dallas are going to dominate offensively, the more obvious route may be through Prescott rather than the ground game.
Turnovers are killing Tampa. Their turnover differential is -5, compared with Dallas at even. Tampa have thrown/committed enough mistakes that an already limited offence is constantly making life harder for itself.
And the biggest issue:
No Baker Mayfield. Rookie Jalon Daniels is set to make his second NFL start. Tampa managed only 14 points against Green Bay last week, while Mayfield is out with a thumb injury.
There is also a significant defensive absence: Antoine Winfield Jr. is out with a fractured rib and expected to miss 2–4 weeks. On paper it doesn’t look good for the Buc’s.
🎯 The betting stats that jump out
Let’s have a look at some decent betting angles for Thursday night football:
Dak Prescott passing yards OVER. His market has already moved from roughly 257.5 to 263.5, which tells us the books are adjusting upward. He’s averaging 266.3 passing yards and Tampa are without Winfield. With the strong run defence I expect serious yardage through the air.
Bucky Irving rushing yards OVER. Irving has 241 rushing yards from 56 attempts (4.3 YPC) and now faces a Dallas defence surrendering around 150 rushing yards per game. He is around 57.5 yards so seems a clear banker to me, with the rookie QB looking to learn on the running backs.
Dallas team points / Cowboys scoring markets could be of interest. Dallas average 30.5 PPG while Tampa average only 19.
🦅 Rookie Verdict
COWBOYS WIN — BUT BUCKY COULD HAVE A NIGHT...
Dallas simply have too much firepower on paper. Prescott has eight touchdowns against one interception, Lamb is approaching 500 receiving yards already, and Tampa are asking an undrafted rookie quarterback to keep pace with the NFL’s second-highest scoring offence.
But the Cowboys’ run defence is the stat that makes this more interesting than the records suggest. If Tampa can lean heavily on Bucky Irving, control possession and keep Daniels out of obvious passing situations, they have a route to keeping it competitive.
UK Rookie prediction: Cowboys Win and cosily
Early betting leans: Bucky Irving rushing yards OVER • Dak Prescott passing yards OVER • Dallas to win but cautious on the spread with Bucky expected to fire
